The Hungerford & Associated Families Society Inc is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to researching the history of the Hungerford family in Australia and New Zealand. Emanuel Hungerford and Catherine Loane migrated to Sydney in 1828 on the Alexander Henry, and settled in the Hunter Valley where their large family married with other early settlers.

Three of Emanuel’s and Catherine’s sons married daughters of Tom White Melville Winder and Ellen Johnson, so the majority of Hungerford descendants today share Winder and Johnson ancestors as well. Other associated families include Loanes who are descended from Catherine’s ancestry. The descendants of Emanuel and Catherine now number in the thousands and include a diversity of family backgrounds and careers and locations around Australia and New Zealand.

What we do

For more than 25 years, dedicated members of the Society have shared family stories, researched history back to the Irish and English roots of the Hungerfords and systematically gathered records for family research. We have a vast collection of records births, marriaages and deaths, and digital copies of valuable photos.

We welcome you to join our Society, whether you’re associated by birth, adoption, marriage or friendship.

The Hungerford family traces its roots to medieval times in England, where there coats of arms and tombs can still be seen in Salisbury Cathedral and the ruins of Farleigh-Hungerford Castle. Emanuel’s more recent roots were in Cork, Ireland, where Hungerfords intermarried with Daunts, Bechers and Boyles over a number of generations.

The Irish Hungerfords are descendants of the English Hungerfords who once ruled from Farleigh-Hungerford Castle, where a museum remains.
