Great-grandfather of Emanuel Hungerford (1785-1872)

Lineage: Emanuel Hungerford < Ann Daunt < Ann Daunt < Henry Daunt

Henry Daunt was probably born about 1677 in Co Cork, the younger son of George Daunt and Martha Turner. He was born after the birth of his brother in about 1675 and (as he was married in 1698) probably no later than 1683.

Henry Daunt married Catherine Roe in 1698 (Cork and Ross Marriage Licence Bonds). They do not appear to have had any children. Catherine died between 1698 and Henry’s remarriage in 1706.

Henry Daunt and Ann Knolles were married in 1706 (Cork and Ross Marriage Licence Bonds).

Henry farmed lands at Knocknamana and Fahalea, a townland near Carrigaline, Cork, and became ancestor of the Daunts of Fahalea and of Newborough.

Henry Daunt made a will dated 9 October 1735 at Fahalea. This left his house and an annuity of £25 to his wife Ann, and mentioned the settlement of his estates at Fahalea and Brownstown on his eldest son Thomas Daunt (prior to Thomas’s marriage to Ann Fisher). Bequests of several hundred pounds were made to his remaining sons: 2nd – George (£500 and lands of Ballygrassane), 3rd – Henry (£150), 4th – Achilles (£150), 5th – Hungerford (£300) and 6th – Boyle (£300). Provision was made for his estates to pass to the sons of his brother Thomas: 1st – Thomas, 2nd – Achilles, 3rd – George, 4th – Kingscott. The will also left sums of money to three daughters: Martha (£350), Ann (£300) and Lydia (£300). The executors were to be his wife Ann and his third son Henry Daunt with his brother Thomas Daunt and his friend Samuel Hodder as overseers.

A codicil to the will dated 1737 mentioned that his wife Ann had died. Her diamond ring was bequeathed to their daughter Martha. Henry’s son Achilles was made executor in Ann’s place. The will was proved in Ireland on 19 February (1738) 1739 (Betham Genealogical Abstracts Prerogative Administrations v 17 p 155).

Henry died about 1739, probably at Fahalea, Cork. His death was after 1737 when he made a codicil to his will and before February 1739 when his will was proved.

Children

Henry and Ann had at least nine children and at least 27 grandchildren. Two of their children (George and Ann) married their cousins (Hannah and Achilles), children of Henry’s brother Thomas Daunt. Two sons (Thomas and Achilles) became clergy, while two others (George and Hungerford) became medical doctors and surgeons. The order of birth of their six sons is provided by Henry’s will. The order of daughters is uncertain. The dates of birth for children have been estimated to fit to the overall order of birth.
