Martha Turner (?1650-1710)

Martha Turner was born on an unknown date, the daughter of Henry Turner and Dorothy Boyle. She was probably the younger sister of Elizabeth Turner who married Henry Becher, and perhaps born shortly before her father’s death in 1653.

As Martha’s father died when she was a young child, she was probably raised by her mother and her stepfather Thomas Roberts, a clergyman in the Dioceses of Cork and Ross and of Cloyne who died in 1664.

Martha Turner married George Daunt at an unknown date. The marriage was no later than the birth of their eldest son Thomas in about 1675.

Martha made her will on 17 March (1709) 1710, styling herself as “the widow of George Daunt of Gortingrenane, Cork, Esq.”. The will mentioned her youngest son Henry, her first son Thomas, and her son Thomas’s children Martha, George, Thomas and Achilles, as well as her cousin Thomas Daunt of Kinsale (Betham, Genealogical Abstracts Prerogative Wills, v D (1700-1745) p 21). The identity of this cousin is unknown, but may be a son of Martha’s aunt Mary Turner. The will was proved on 8 May 1710.

Martha died in 1710 at Gortigrenane, Cork.

Children

Martha and George had at least three children but the order of birth is uncertain. They had 18 grandchildren. Four of their grandchildren married each other: Achilles son of Thomas and Ann daughter of Henry; and Hannah daughter of Thomas and George son of Henry.
